There are many different positions available when you want to find kitchen staff jobs in Singapore. The job you find depends on your experience in restaurants and possibly your education. No matric kitchen staff positions like dishwashers and line cooks are typically easy to find. On the other hand, higher level positions like executive chef and kitchen manager usually require at least matric level education and in some cases, even more.
This matric kitchen staff position is in control of the kitchen and typically answers to the general manager or owner. An executive chef is usually very experienced and possibly has a culinary degree, which is why they have an average salary of $2,600 monthly. The executive chef creates the menu and approves all recipes, is responsible for food cost, staff training, and the overall function of the kitchen.
Line cooks are not typically required to have a formal culinary education; in fact, no matric is required in some establishments. These positions are usually trained by lead chefs and more experienced cooks, which is why a formal education is not necessary. Line cooks are most often at the bottom of the rank in the order of cooks. This position is usually assigned to one station, such as working the fryer or saut? station. Experienced line cooks may work in short order diners where they are the only cook and have to work at a fast pace. Line cooks can expect to average $600 monthly.
The dishwashing position or kitchen assistant is the usual training position for someone who want to work in a kitchen but has no experience. This position is responsible for washing dishes, emptying the trash, and essentially doing whatever is needed in the kitchen. Although it is not a glamourous job, if the dishwasher doesn't work, everything in the restaurant can have issues. The monthly pay for a dishwasher is less than that of a line cook, averaging approximately $450 monthly.
